ESSENTIAL OILS: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Essential oils are oils that have been extracted from a plant through a distillation process, and are known to have a wide range of therapeutic effects depending on the source. Essential oils are a highly concentrated extraction of the plant, which allows the unique benefits of each source to have powerful effects on the body.

Essential oils can reduce emotional stress and anxiety, promote restful sleep, increase brain function, and support immune function, among other things.

But, not all essential oils are created equal. Most oils contain synthetic ingredients and fillers. When looking for essential oils, be sure to purchase 100% pure oils that have been sourced responsibly and indigenously. When purchasing oils, be sure they’ve been steam distilled. Purchase organic oils whenever possible.

3 WAYS TO USE ESSENTIAL OILS

Diffuse: My favorite way to use essential oils is to diffuse them in my office, bedroom and other areas of my home. This diffuser is small, elegant and simple — the perfect diffuser to have tucked away in every corner. I diffuse calming oils like lavender in the evenings before bed, or boosting oils like grapefruit or lemon in the morning. My favorite work scents are grounding like basil. When I’m sick, nothing soothes me like minty oils such as eucalyptus and tea tree.

Clean: Using essential oils in homemade cleaning products is a non-toxic alternative to harsh chemicals. I create a custom blend that is a ratio of 2/3 water, 1/3 vinegar, plus about 20 drops of oils. Tea tree is an antibacterial oil that I always include in my surface cleaner. I put my blend in this spray bottle!

Apply topically: Essential oils can be an alternative to perfumes, which often contain toxic chemicals or synthetic scents, or used to bring the same vibe from your home on the go with you. When applying essential oils, I always make sure to use a carrier oil, such as almond or coconut oil, to safely dilute the oil on my skin. Check out this DIY face oil guide for some inspiration!

VITRUVI: SOPHISTICATED SIMPLICITY

I’m currently loving Vitruvi, an essential oils company that helps you live more naturally in a sophisticated way. Their products elevate your beauty, body and home rituals into simple moments of wellness.

While Vitruvi’s ethos of sophisticated simplicity completely jives with my style, what I love most is that they offer premium oils without price markups common in the essential oil industry. The essential oil industry is known for multi-level marketing. Because Vitruvi only sells direct-to-consumer and through select wholesalers, they’re able to offer 100% pure essential oils. Vitruvi oils don’t contain any fillers, are purity- and potency-tested 3 times, are always non-GMO, and are certified organic whenever possible.

As for their products, Vitruvi offers single-origin oils (Lavender and Eucalyptus are my favorites) and a variety of oil blends (so far I’m loving Dusk and Pacific), as well as mists, roll-ons, carrier oils and sleek, minimal, handmade diffusers. They’re all swoon-worthy.
